““Use Engineering Analysis and Simulation to verify your ideas, extend your ambition, and allowing you to challenge the conventional””

Carl Brookes is Team Director leading Ramboll’s Advanced Engineering and Geomatics Unit in Southampton. Carl originally joined Gifford (now part of Ramboll) in 1984 becoming Associate in 1999, Technical Director in 2002, and Team Director in 2012.

Specializing in Engineering Analysis using numerical methods particularly those based on Finite Element techniques, Carl regularly lectures and talks on the subjects of advanced engineering, simulation and geomatics at various institution and seminar events.

During his 30 years’ experience in the analysis of Civil, Building and Industrial structures, Carl has been responsible for a wide range of advanced analytical projects and has the ability to work with many disciplines at an advanced level.

He is expert in performance based design and assessment with considerable experience in: construction analysis of bridges and tall buildings; non-linear simulation of concrete and masonry; special structural assessment and testing; analysis of historic structures; dynamic analysis of structures (vibration, earthquake, collision, blast); structural monitoring.

Carl is also responsible for numerical studies and investigations requiring the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) which have including air quality and fire studies, micro-climate assessments, and building environment simulations.

Research and development work includes: the application of Magnesium Oxide cement composite boards; laser aided modelling (LAM); investigation of masonry serviceability; the development of a new floor vibration assessment technique; and the use of CFD to support the structural design process. Earlier work on masonry arch bridges earned his team a Queen's Award for Enterprise and Innovation.

Carl is a member of the NAFEMS UK Steering Group, NAFEMS Computational Structural Mechanics working group and has worked on the ICE Proceedings Engineering and Computational Mechanics editorial panel as the inaugural deputy chair.
