Onboarding new employees amid a national lockdown

Our new employees from the REC share some insight into their experience of being onboarded at Ramboll during the uncertain times of a nation-wide lockdown.

Workplace dynamics changed drastically with the announcement of national lockdown due to COVID-19. Teamwork and collaboration became virtual, with training and brainstorming, logistics and IT support all done remotely. Although there was an instantaneous shift of all employees to ‘Working from Home’, the focus on deliverables remained the same and irrespective of the challenges, Ramboll Engineering Centre (REC) team onboarded new employees virtually. We spoke to some of them. 

Bhushan Rupesh Bramhecha, Senior Design Engineer, working in the REC Roads team was supposed to move to Gurugram from Pune to join Ramboll when the nation-wide curfew was imposed that was then followed by the national lockdown making the situation uncertain. “I discussed my concerns with the recruitment representative and asked if I could join Ramboll and start work virtually. Soon, I was onboarded virtually and the constant support from the team, including the leadership, has been reassuring”, Bhushan adds, who is currently working from Pune. 

Rohit Rajan, who joined as the Assistant Design Engineer – Electrical in the REC MEP team and is currently working remotely from Kerala, was also supposed to join when the national lockdown was announced. “I was very anxious during this time looking at the rising unemployment rate, and I also heard from my peers who were losing out on their opportunities due to some companies withdrawing the offer of employment. My line manager in Ramboll and the HR representatives called me every week to reassure and update me on the progress of the joining formalities, which made me feel confident. And by the third phase of the lockdown, I was onboarded in Ramboll and the team virtually.  I have been in touch with my team on a regular basis, but I am looking forward to physically meeting them whenever the situation permits.”

Sidarth Kumar is working remotely from Noida as a Senior Design Engineer in the REC Tunnels and Underground Structures team. “There was a feeling of uncertainty with the pandemic and a lockdown being imposed. But technology and current software tools have made it possible to efficiently work on a project with your team from anywhere in the world.” 

Ashish Nair joined the REC Bridges & Civils team as a design engineer during the lockdown. “Everybody at Ramboll is just a call or ping away, and I think I have been as productive from home as I would have been at the office” states Ashish who is working remotely from Pune.

Aditee Sharma, HR Business Partner, shares some techniques they used to make employees feel part of the team though they have been introduced to the company and team members virtually. “Some of the processes that helped us engage new hires from the very first day was connecting to ‘buddies’, who are employees from Ramboll that are available for the new joiners to advise and guide as they start work remotely. Virtual sessions with heads of departments and peers have been held as well as access to online learning and training resources. A structured technical onboarding helped set the direction right for the new joiner.”

Anbumani Anbalagan, Ramboll’s Recruitment lead in India added that “All this was possible only because of the collaborative effort from all the support teams involved.”
