Ariadne Building and Piazza

Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth is a mixed use redevelopment of a major former Royal Navy site on the waterfront. Our engineers worked on the Ariadne Building and the piazza that it faces — both part of the northern commercial development of the site. Previously, we had provided structural and civil engineering services for the southern part of the site, where 300 new houses and apartments have been constructed.

The Ariadne Building is a four storey steel frame hotel and retail complex. It forms an integral part of the Gunwharf Quays development and faces the head of a canal in Portsmouth Harbour. The piazza is an area of hard landscaping intended to form a focal point for events such as street theatre and open-air concerts.

The steel superstructure and composite floor construction enabled the achievement of relatively large spans and minimised the number of columns required in the ground floor retail areas. The construction programme was short, requiring the use of prefabricated bathroom pods and proprietary walling systems. The structural design took these into account in relation not only to the loading but also the installation sequence during the erection of the superstructure.

The Ariadne Buidling is a good example of a multi-disciplinary project in which the client has a single point of contact with a project engineer who is able to call on the expertise of a range of consultants within the organisation.
