The new three-storey office building for the British Geological Survey at their Keyworth campus is the first large-scale building in the UK to use TermoDeck precast slabs supported on timber in a composite structural frame.

The project was driven by the low energy brief developed by the client. The composite frame solution combines the low embodied energy and low CO2 figures of timber construction with the thermal mass advantages of concrete. The TermoDeck system circulates air through integrated ductwork for heating, cooling and ventilation.

The building's walls consist of cross-laminated timber panels, with ample glazing. One of the main design features is a three storey dome, where the two 15m x 30m wings of the building intersect. The fabric of its suspended roof comprises a bed of ETFE cushions, which provide lightweight insulation and have heat-retaining properties.

The fill for the sub-base level has been made entirely from crushed recycled construction materials, and the building is fitted with photovoltaics and rainwater harvesting equipment, adding to its low-energy credentials. Off-site prefabrication ensured low waste. Geological finds made during the build were used to build gabion retaining walls.
