Molecular Sciences, University of Birmingham

The new Molecular Sciences Building is to be benchmarked against world class facilities.  Consisting of high specification laboratories allied with flexible office, teaching and collaboration spaces, the scheme is to strengthen the Universities capabilities in chemical, environmental and biomolecular sciences. Building on Ramboll’s leading expertise in the design of lab facilities, the structural design requires specialist analysis to ensure the building meets the stringent requirements of the sensitive equipment to be accommodated.

With low and very low vibration criteria (including VC-D) spaces required, Ramboll have developed a structural strategy that will account for ground vibrations generated by the adjacent campus roads and Worcester-Birmingham railway line. As a potential multi-phase development, Ramboll have assisted with identifying the site constraints and aided the team to develop options for the wider site masterplan.  Careful consideration of the interfaces between Phase 1 and the second phase building have formed a key part of these assessments. The project is being delivered in accordance with the Universities recently updated BIM requirements.  This includes all below ground drainage to be modelled in Revit to inform the Universities campus model.  Ramboll have worked with the University to establish the approach and deliverables of the drainage modelling.
