Innovative approach to mine water decontamination

Ramboll developed an innovative, sustainable and economically beneficial approach to addressing the impact of metal contamination on river sediments in the River Nent in Cumbria.

Site Solutions unlocks development potential of chlorinated solvent impacted land

Site Solutions staff are using an innovative approach to remediating chlorinated solvents at a brownfield development site in Belgium. The former metal processing site is heavily contaminated with tetrachloroethene and trichloroethene to a depth of 16m and over a surface area of more than 5,000m².

Managing the demolition of former bank headquarters

Financial services company BNP Paribas Fortis appointed Ramboll to help manage the environmental and health impacts of a challenging demolition project on their former headquarters. The building had a fully operational metro network line running through its basement, was situated in a dense urban area and had a number of health and safety issues.

A former military camp is now turned into a residential area including a kinder garden.

Progress toward restoring value of Fountain Lake

Removal of more than 1 million cubic yards of sediment will reduce the lake’s internal phosphorus load and increase the water depth – ultimately maximizing water clarity and water quality throughout the watershed

End of Waste assessment on biomass fly ash

Ramboll carried out a risk assessment on biomass fly ash for Eco 2 Ltd in 2016. Our client operates a biomass renewable energy facility that combusts straw and clean wood and produces a potash-rich fly ash. We supported their End of Waste submission and established that the fly ash can be used as a fertiliser substitute when applied to agricultural land with no significant risks to human health or the environment.

Addressing methane using soil vapor extraction

Ramboll designed an active vapor extraction system to mitigate the concentrations of methane detected in the subsoil of a large commercial property and to ensure vapor intrusion control, thus reducing the risk of methane flammability in air.

Optimizing tailings management at the Svartliden mine

The Svartliden Mine was brought into production in 2005 as an open pit. All tailings are disposed in a dam. A sustainable solution for the management of the tailings generated during next mining phase has to be defined as the dam capacity is soon consumed.

Old Town Dock detailed design

A brownfield site full of buried obstructions — including three historic docks, riverwall tie-rods and boulders — is the location of this riverside residential development in Newport, Wales. We provided the foundation design and a loadbearing masonry option for the three buildings: four, five and six storeys high, linked by a ground floor carpark.Our design consisted of loadbearing masonry walls and precast concrete plank floors with structural screeds. In the architect’s scheme, some walls didn’t line up between floors which can be a challenge in loadbearing masonry work. We overcame this by proposing a concrete slab, transferring the loads from the walls above to those below. M1 motorway widening (J25-28)

Involving the upgrade of the motorway network through widening of existing three lane carriageway to four lanes over a length of 25km, this Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract was the first where the target cost came in below scheme budget. It is also notable for being the first UK motorway widening scheme to be constructed using a moveable steel barrier traffic management system instead of a contra flow.

St Matthew Academy

Education from start to finish — primary school to A level — is provided at this single complex, created through the Government's City Academies scheme. It's built on the playing field of an existing school, which remained open during construction. When the works were complete, the old school was demolished to make room for a new sports field.Most of the teaching spaces are housed in two reinforced concrete wings, respectively two and three storeys high. The wings are neatly linked by an enclosed steel bridge and a triple height assembly hall. The Hepworth Wakefield

The new Hepworth Wakefield gallery is the focal point of regeneration on the River Calder waterfront, formerly the site of a huddle of low mill buildings. It houses a collection of sculpture by local-born artist Barbara Hepworth alongside the works of other prominent artists, and is one of the largest art galleries yet built outside London.

Tithebarn city centre regeneration

We are working on various aspects of the new masterplan for the city centre of Preston, Lancashire. The area concerned is known as Heart of the Tithebarn Regeneration Area (HTRA) and covers approximately 14.8 hectares. The masterplan provides for 32 new-build blocks, the refurbishment of existing structures, relocation of the bus station and a considerable area of new retail space, leisure facilities, public spaces and car parking.Among the key environmental aspects considered during the evolution of the scheme have been land quality, archaeology, ecology (there are bats on the site), noise impacts, air quality, microclimate, drainage, townscape, visual context and waste management. Impact on the local economy and social structure have also been studied.Our consultants undertook preliminary microclimate analysis of daylight, sunlight and wind flow on the development site and the surrounding area. The objective of the wind flow analysis was to ensure that the proposals offered a year-round comfortable external environment.Our infrastructure engineers have completed an extensive 3D earthworks model of the proposed new bus station area that optimises the cut and fill volumes. A comprehensive drainage strategy has been developed that minimises the need for sewer diversion. The surface water strategy endorses the use of Sustainable Drainages Systems (SUDS) and includes rainwater harvesting, porous paving and the extensive use of green/brown roofs.

Jätkäsaari infrastructure and environmental planning

Having served as Helsinki's cargo port for almost 100 years, Jätkäsaari will be transformed into an attractive urban residential area by 2025. The Jätkäsaari construction project consists of various commissions, which Ramboll is planning in connection with numerous client and cooperative partners.

Officially opened on 17th June 2016 the new Tate Modern extension later named the Blavatnik building is an iconic world-class addition to London’s skyline. Enabling new ways to display Tate's collection, the new building has been instrumental to Tate Modern's recent success, as it topped the polls as the UK's most visited attraction in 2018.

Nordhavnen - international role model for sustainable urban development

Helix-London development

Two elliptical residential towers of different heights sit above a two storey podium in this mixed use development in London's Canary Wharf. One of Europe's largest McDonald's restaurants has been demolished to make way for it.The concrete frame towers, one 28 storeys high and the other 35 storeys, are linked by spaghetti-like steel bridges. Each floor has a wrap-around balcony with views to the nearby marina. Upgrading of the Ringsted-Fehmarn Railway Line

As part of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel project, the 110 km railway line between Ringsted and the Fehmarn-link in Rødby will undergo a comprehensive upgrade. The project includes raising the speed limit to 200 km/h and expansion from single to double track between Vordingborg and Rødby. Existing railway stations will be rebuilt and a new station will be built in Holeby. All of this in order to ensure a quick and efficient transportation of cargo and passengers to Germany.

New Northzealand Hospital

The one of a kind new Northzealand hospital in Hillerød, Denmark seeks to reinvent hospital designs for the future. Following a 12-month intensive international design competition, the Architectural consortium of Herzog & de Meuron/Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter was awarded the contract, with Ramboll named as the engineering consultant, providing a full range of engineering services.
