Renewable energy

Renewable energy is key to the transition to a low-carbon sustainable energy system. Renewable sources of energy have been the driver of much of the growth in the global clean energy sector for the past 25 years, and today around 19% of the world’s energy consumption comes from renewables.

Ramboll’s energy team provides expertise on the full spectrum of renewable technologies. We provide consulting services on wind energy, solar energy, waste-to-energy, biomass, biogas, hydro power, geothermal energy, and tidal & wave.

Wind energy

Ramboll has more than 30 years of experience in the wind industry. Our portfolio includes the successful completion of projects in 21 countries in offshore wind and 60 countries onshore. In total, Ramboll relies on more than 300 staff dedicated to wind energy, enabling us to deliver services with a global perspective yet with a local expertise. With our multidisciplinary capabilities we offer a full range of services that cover the entire life cycle of a project, from planning and project development to design, procurement, implementation and follow-up on operation, maintenance, and finally to decommissioning.

Solar energy

Ramboll has over 25 years of experience working with solar energy. We have contributed to the success of more than 500 small to utility scale solar power projects, carried out in more than 25 countries around the world. Our experience also includes consultancy services provided to small-scale solar thermal plants of >200 m2 to the world’s largest plant of 150,000 m2, which is located in Silkeborg, Denmark.

Waste-to-energy

Ramboll is a globally renowned consultant within waste-to-energy. This position has been obtained through a long list of successfully completed projects where Ramboll has been responsible for the planning, engineering, procurement and contract management of waste management facilities. Ramboll has worked on waste-to-energy projects in 45 countries, providing consulting services for 155 new units and retrofits. Ramboll also has considerable experience in the planning and implementation of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants generating biogas from biodegradable wastes for the production of low-carbon heat and electricity.

Biomass

Ramboll is one of the most experienced engineering consultancies in the field of biomass, with a track record of delivering over 60 biomass power, heat and CHP facilities, using a full spectrum of fuel types.  We specialise in reliable and high efficiency facilities, with some of the resulting plants using advanced energy recovery systems that allow them to claim energy efficiency rates of more than 100 percent.

Biogas

The utilisation of biogas as a vehicle fuel or in an existing gas grid is an important contribution to sustainability as the fuel is renewable and represents measurable environmental benefits. Ramboll offers a wide range of services within the field of gas application from biogas upgrade plants, gas distribution systems like bus fuelling depots, and distribution to existing or new grid systems.

Hydro power

Over the years Ramboll has become a well-known hydro power consultant, particularly in the Swedish market. Ramboll works to innovate and streamline hydro plants. By utilising the latest technology and optimisation solutions, we optimise the power stations to raise the efficiency of existing units. We design, monitor and assure the quality of investments, both retrofits and new hydro power plants.

Geothermal energy

Ramboll has over 15 years of experience within the field of geothermal energy. This includes areas such as seismic, geological and geophysical studies and investigations including modeling and reservoir hydraulic calculations and evaluation. Furthermore, Ramboll has specific knowledge within the field of well site layout/infrastructure and permissions, and follow-up on operation and maintenance.

Tidal & wave

Ramboll has a long track record of inventive and innovative design in the marine environment and for taking advantage of the repeatability of structure for the renewable sector, including tidal & wave installations. Currently, Ramboll is working with Swedish Minesto to help roll out the technology.

Solar heating plant and pit storage in Vojens, Denmark

South-Jutland stores the sun’s heat in the world's largest pit heat storage

In the Danish town of Vojens, a 70,000 m2 solar heating plant is being established. The heat is absorbed to heat water, which is then transported to a 200 million litre pit, for storage. Here, the water is saved for district heating consumers to use during the autumn and winter season. Vojens District Heating and Ramboll have designed and constructed the record breaking project.
