Offshore substation design
Ramboll has specialised in the design of offshore substations for offshore wind farms. As a leading offshore engineering consultant, we have intimate knowledge of the challenges associated with the design, construction, maintenance and operation of offshore substations and wind farms.
Ramboll’s vast track record within offshore platform design is founded on four decades of offshore oil and gas experience and more than a decade designing offshore wind turbine foundations. Based on this solid background, our specialised engineers work internationally with the development and complete design of offshore substations.
Over recent years, we have carried out the detailed design of the offshore substation topsides and substructure for several of Northern Europe's largest offshore wind farms.
Ramboll’s multidisciplinary engineering team handles the entire design process from conceptualisation to detailed design – installation and commissioning.
We design substructures/jackets and develop topsides layouts with consideration to safety, mechanical handling, commissioning, operation and maintenance. The design includes implementation of electrical equipment such as transformers, reactors, GIS switchgear, MV/LV-switchgear, UPS system and SCADA/control systems and specification of all auxiliary equipment such as cranes, emergency diesel systems, workshops, fire-fighting systems and drain systems.

In the summer of 2011 Ramboll won the detailed design of the offshore substation for DONG Energy's Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm in the UK. The wind farm is estimated to make a significant contribution to the UK government goal of installing 33GW of wind production by 2020. The contract with DONG Energy included the conceptual and detailed design of the entire substation, covering both jacket and complete topside design.
The Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, which was completed in 2013, is the world's third largest offshore wind farm. The 400 MW wind farm, placed in the Kattegat strait between Jutland and the island of Anholt, produces energy equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 400,000 households, or 4% of Denmark's total power consumption.
Horns Rev 2 is an offshore wind farm located on Horns Rev (Horns Reef) in the eastern North Sea, about 30 km off the Danish coast.
The Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm, 20 kilometres off the coastal town of Sheringham in the UK will upon completion in 2012 produce clean energy to approximately 220,000 households and contribute to a reduction of 500,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
DONG Energy Wind Power is developing the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm in the UK. Ramboll carried out the design of a reactive compensation substation for the wind farm, as well as technical assistance during tendering, fabrication and installation.
In December 2016, Ramboll was awarded the detailed design contract for the offshore switchyard (OSY) for Elia’s Modular Offshore Grid in Belgian waters.
The Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind farm project is a significant step towards Taiwan’s transition to renewable energy. Ramboll designed the two large 600MW offshore substations for the wind farm.
