Uncertainties about chemical, biological and physical exposures in the workplace and indoor air quality in buildings can affect employee health and wellbeing and increase business risk through possible litigation and reputational damage. Our internationally recognised team of industrial hygienists, toxicologists, epidemiologists and health scientists perform risk assessments, develop practical controls and partner with our clients to implement health, safety and indoor air quality programs.

Our expertise includes evaluation and control of chemical exposures, occupational epidemiology, risk assessment and indoor air quality and ventilation, and is paired with a deep understanding of regulatory compliance requirements around the world. We are skilled in communicating clearly to workers in diverse workplace environments, providing concise messaging to executives and presenting effectively in regulatory, litigation and public settings.

We provide responsive testing programs that rapidly address questions about chemical exposures in the workplace and comprehensive reviews of worker health profiles that span decades. Our evaluations of sources and potential causes of health effects have addressed a broad cross-section of substances, including asbestos, talc, solvents, metals, Legionella, mold, pesticides and PCBs.

Our services include:

  • Industrial hygiene risk assessments for chemical, biological and physical hazards including defining similar exposure groups, performing qualitative risk assessments and collection of samples for comparison to exposure limit or health-based criteria
  • Applied epidemiology for reviewing the experience of worker populations from a facility or industry and for designing and implementing prospective worker health monitoring programs
  • Investigating causes of building-related health concerns including mold/microbial growth, Legionella, operations of ventilation systems and emissions from building materials
  • Identification and remediation management of hazardous building materials including asbestos, lead and PCBs
  • Exposure reconstruction analysis and evaluating potential exposures under varying conditions within our test chamber facility
  • Auditing Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) programs and designing updated approaches to help integrate groups that previously operated with separate and differing systems

Addressing concerns about exposures to theatrical fog and haze

When actors in Broadway productions expressed concern about potential health risks of exposure to theatrical fog, haze and other special effects, Ramboll teamed up with the Icahn School of Medicine at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital to evaluate whether reported symptoms could have been caused by these exposures.
