Engineering and consulting for the life cycle of towers & telecom
Design & analysis of telecom structures
Within all types of telecom passive infrastructure, we undertake design & analysis to deliver solutions that are reliable and optimised to the needs of the project. We leverage our hands-on experience from other parts of the asset life cycle and integrate it in our design solutions to ensure effective buildability and the required durability.
Our design process aims to minimise total site life cycle costs, based on our insight into the regional cost drivers & dynamics of the different markets we operate in.
We do design & analysis of all types of telecom passive infrastructure, including towers, guyed masts, monopoles, roof-tops, aesthetic solutions and small cell solutions as well as foundations, earthing systems and buildings.
Sourcing of telecom structures
We assist our clients in developing the sourcing strategy and specifications for telecom structures that produce the desired outputs as well as evaluating and qualifying suppliers that can deliver on their promise.
Construction site management & inspections
To manage the scattered location and rapid deployment rate of telecom structure builds, we provide the supervisory capabilities required to exercise proper construction site management, monitoring Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ), claims, progress, etc. on behalf of our clients.
We design and execute tailored inspections on site new-builds and upgrade projects as well as part of recurring maintenance, to maximise the reliability and service life of assets. Our design and fieldwork can be integrated through our project asset management and analysis software, providing the asset owner with a completely digitalised blueprint of the site from planning to decommissioning.
As independent consultants our level of engagement can be adjusted to the needs of the project from external advisors to client representative roles and 3rd party quality inspection. Our services are delivered offsite as well as onsite and from raw material to project completion stages.

Validation and strengthening of sites for telecom
For telecom roll-out planning, upgrades or M&A transactions site data, load and structure validations provides essential insight to the capabilities of telecom site assets. We scale and adapt our services, from site data collection to validations, based on the scope, purpose and detail needed to fulfil client objectives, with a fast turnaround time. In situations where desired site capabilities are not present, we can provide solutions such as strengthening, re- or new-build, best fulfilling KPIs to take plans forward.
Planning, execution and performance evaluation for cellular networks
For public and private entities, reliable and efficient cellular network coverage is a paramount necessity to their operations. Many buildings, however, by design cause poor mobile and data network coverage.
Ramboll performs indoor and outdoor cellular network coverage and performance measurements (incl. ‘walk-test’ and ‘drive-test’) as well as advising scaled solutions to establish local area coverage. Combining our competencies within buildings and telecom, we provide advisory as well as project management services in relation to establishing and maintaining Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS).
Ramboll has established partnerships with several specialised niche consultants to offer our clients advice and troubleshooting from a broad and packaged set of telecom capabilities.
Given the essentiality of operating networks, we can mobilise at short notice to troubleshoot errors and performance issues in networks, which can often comprise process chains of multiple different telecoms technologies and devices.
We support all KPIs for the network such as signal strength and quality on 2G, 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi (WLan) networks, Speech Quality (PESQ), dropped-call rate (DCR) & call failure rate (CFR), Speed rating (IP Throughput), SMS / MMS (Speed and delivery rate), video stream (YouTube) and e-mail.

Health & Safety around emitting devices
Whether in the commercial and industrial workspace or residential area, Ramboll provides advisory and measurements for electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and ionized radiation from telecom and powered appliances.
To ensure a safe workspace for employees and comply with legislation, employers are in many cases obligated to assess risk of exposure to EMR. We conduct assessments as well as facilitation of training and portable devices so that our clients’ H&S responsible can address concerns also in changing workspaces.
Installing telecoms on residential buildings requires a special effort to address concerns toward radiation exposure. Ramboll as an independent third party has the knowledge and equipment to assess exposure against thresholds providing homeowners, landlords and telecom operators with the data required for an informed and productive dialogue.
Asset management
For managing telecom roll-out projects and network infrastructure we develop, operate and license software packages that brings transparency and insight to our clients’ decision-making, by leveraging the power of data.
Our platforms RamSite and RamBase are both strong tools for managing telecommunication projects. RamSite is a strong system for managing rollout and operations, while RamBase is applicable for site assessments and engineering analysis with strong features for on-site data collection and interconnection via mobile devices.
Developed from our insight into the challenges faced by our client network of telecom operators and asset owners, we also use the software in our own service delivery process providing a seamless handover of projects and assets to the client.
We conduct drone surveys to capture and document the nature and challenges for telecom structures, in order to analyse and mitigate it in the digital space.

Our track record within planning of decommissioning projects includes some of the tallest and most complex telecommunication structures in the world – with Health & Safety, environment and efficiency at the core.

As a result of this model, our clients not only benefit from telecom structures tailored to project needs, but also reduce their risk related to sourcing and procurement.
